Joana, de novo!Joana, again!

Só quando a Joana ergueu o rosto e olhou para mim é que a reconheci. Já a tinha fotografado antes, havia mais  de um ano, também ali, no jardim da Cordoaria. A Joana continua a ler livros em inglês e desta vez a escolha recaiu sobre George R. R. Martin e as suas famosíssimas Crónicas de Gelo e Fogo. Contou-me que conhece imensa gente que leu a saga e que ficou completamente viciada, daí ter decidido experimentar também. "Game of Thrones - Vol. I" era a sua primeira incursão na obra deste autor bestseller e a aposta valera a pena: sentia-se completamente seduzida pelo enredo e pelos personagens e estava segura de que iria ler os outros nove volumes.

I only recognized Joana when she lifted up her face and looked at me. I had taken her picture before, more than a year ago, also there, at Cordoaria's garden. Joana keeps reading books in English and this time her choice fell on George R. R. Martin and his famous A Song of Ice and Fire. She told me that she knows a lot of people who read the saga and got completely addicted, so she also decided to give it a shot. "Game of Thrones - Vol. 1" was her first incursion in the work of this bestselling author and the bet was worthwhile: she felt completely seduced by the plot and by the characters and she was sure that she would read the other nine volumes.

All you need is love

O Ricardo trabalha perto da Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett. Por isso, aproveita os momentos livres de que dispõe para ir até lá e ler. A zona onde o encontrei é a que considero mais bonita e acolhedora em toda a sala de leitura: pelas enormes janelas entra muita luz; para lá dos vidros predomina o verde das árvores, o azul do céu e uma nesga de Douro; no interior, sofás e poltronas convidam os leitores a ficar o tempo que for necessário. Ali, naquele recanto, lia "A Revolução do Amor", um extenso ensaio do filósofo francês Luc Ferry. O Ricardo, que já tinha lido outro livro deste autor, considera-o "um humanista secular com uma perspetiva muito interessante e muito diferente sobre o papel das relações, já que defende que o que move as pessoas hoje em dia, muito mais que Deus ou a pátria, é o amor". O ensaio de Luc Ferry foi direto para a minha lista de leituras a fazer em breve.

Ricardo works nearby the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library. So, he uses the free time he has to go there and read. The area where I found him is the one I consider the prettiest and cosier in all of the reading room: through the huge windows comes plenty of light; beyond the glasses predominates the green from the trees, the blue from the sky and a bit of the Douro river; inside, the sofas and armchairs invite the readers to stay as long as necessary. There, in that nook, he was reading "On Love: A Philosophy for the Twenty-First Century", an extensive essay by the French philosopher Luc Ferry. Ricardo, who had read another book from this author, considers him to be "a secular humanist with a very interesting and different perspective about the role of relationships, once he defends that what moves people nowadays, much more than God or homeland, is love." The essay of Luc Ferry went straight to my list of readings to do soon.

No 507 / In the 507 bus: Francisca & Toni Morrison

Conheci-a numa manhã em que me deslocava para o trabalho no "meu" autocarro de todos os dias. A Francisca lia "Song of Solomon", um romance escrito por Toni Morrison e cujo estudo era necessário para o curso de Literatura que frequenta. Leitora assídua desde pequena, a Francisca sabe que este é um hábito — e um gosto — imprescindível para os seus estudos universitários. Quanto ao livro, estava a adorar!

I met her one morning on "my" everyday bus on my way to work. Francisca was reading "Sonf of Solomon", a novel written by Toni Morrison and whish readind was required for the Literature course she attends. A usual reader since she was a child, Francisca knows that this habit - and a pleasure - indispensable for her college studies. As far as the book, she was loving it!

Este homem é do nortePraise the North

Na manhã em que foi à Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett o António escolheu dois livros para ler: "Espiritualidade e Arte de Camilo" e "Sob Céus Estranhos". O primeiro por ser sobre Camilo Castelo Branco, um autor que sempre apreciou e que é, palavras suas, "Portugal espremido". O segundo, por ser de Ilse Losa, uma autora que teve o privilégio de conhecer numa das edições da Feira do Livro do Porto e que, como portuense, considera imprescindível, sobretudo se tivermos em conta a "portofobia" que diz existir em Portugal. O António não entende por que motivo se encontra paralisado o norte do país e julga urgente que se aprofunde "o que é ser Porto". "É preciso idealizar, dinamizar e concretizar o norte a começar por cada um de nós portuenses e não ficar à espera de subsídios", diz este leitor com muita convicção.

In the morning he went to the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library, António chose two books to read: "Espiritualidade e Arte de Camilo" e "Sob Céus Estranhos". The first one because it is about Camilo Castelo Branco, an author he always enjoyed and who is, according to him, a "synthesis of Portugal". The second one, because it is written by Ilse Losa, an author he had the privilege to meet in one of the editions of Porto Book Fair and who, as a person born in Porto, António believes to be indispensable, mainly if we consider the "Portophobia" that e claims to exist in Portugal. António doesn't understand why the North of the country is paralyzed and he thinks it is urgent to get to the bottom of "what it is to be Porto". It is necessary to idealize, boost and materialize the North, staring by each person born in Porto and not to stand by waiting for funds", says this reader with a lot of conviction.

A Natacha descobriu Laura Dockrill por acaso no Twitter e passou a ler os seus livros desde então. Embora o trabalho desta autora se destine ao público infantojuvenil, a Natacha considera-o adequado à sua necessidade mais premente: melhorar o seu nível de inglês. Para além do mais, todas as histórias contadas são divertidíssimas. "Darcy Burdock", o livro que se vê na foto, é o título mais recente.

Natacha found out Laura Dockrill by accident on Twitter and started reading her books ever since. Although the work of this author is directed to the infant and juvenile public, Natacha thinks it is suitable to her urgent need: improve her level of English. Further than this, all stories are full of fun. "Darcy Burdock", the book in the photo, is the newest title.

Ler antes do Tai ChiTo read before Tai Chi

Aos sábados de manhã, a Rafaela costuma fazer Tai Chi no jardim do Palácio de Cristal. Por vezes, acontece-lhe chegar um pouco antes da aula começar e nessas ocasiões aproveita o tempo de espera para ler. Numa altura em que o ar da manhã ainda era bastante fresco, procurou guarida na sala de leitura da Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett, local onde a conheci e fotografei. Lia "O Último Segredo", de José Rodrigues dos Santos, um autor cujo percurso tem vindo a acompanhar desde que leu "A Fórmula de Deus", de que gostou muito. Diz a Rafael que aprecia em particular a forma como o autor se baseia em factos verídicos para conceber os seus romances.

On saturday mornings, Rafaela usually does Tai Chi at the garden os Palácio de Cristal. Sometimes, she gets there before the lessons starts so she takes the opportunity to read while she waits. In a morning when the air was still rather cold, she sought shelter in the reading room of the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library, the place where I met and photographed her. She was reading "O Último Segredo", from José Rodrigues dos Santos, an author she has been following since she read "A Fórmula de Deus", which she liked a lot.  Rafaela particularly enjoys the way the author writes his novels based in true facts.

Luciana, Adam Smith & Fernando Pessoa

À entrada do jardim do Palácio de Cristal encontrei a Luciana que, enquanto esperava por uma amiga, começara a ler um dos grossíssimos volumes de "A Riqueza das Nações" requisitados na Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett. Já tinha ouvido falar nesta obra, mas só depois de um amigo muito especial a ter lido é que decidiu fazer o mesmo. Leitora assídua, a Luciana gosta de tudo um pouco. "Depende da onda", disse. No entanto, sublinhou que a sua última descoberta foi a poesia, algo que foi adiando e que agora, de forma muito natural, se foi impondo pelas mãos de Fernando Pessoa, o poeta "que é tantos!" e com quem partilha a data de nascimento: 13 de junho.

At the entrance of Palácio de Cristal garden I found Luciana who, while waiting for a friend, had started reading one of the huge volumes of "The Wealth of Nations" requested at Almeida Garrett Municipal Library. She had already heard something about this book, but only after a very special friend had read it she decided to do the same. A regular reader, Luciana likes a bit of everything. "It depends on the mood", she said. Nevertheless, she emphasized that her last discovery was poetry, something that she had been postponing and now, in a very natural way, grew on her by the hands of Fernando Pessoa, the poet who "is so many!" and with whom she shares the birth date: June, 13.

Carla & Nietzsche

Num dos socalcos do jardim do Palácio de Cristal de onde se tem uma vista magnífica sobre o Douro, encontrei a Carla, uma jovem universitária brasileira que veio estudar para o Porto. Lia "Assim Falou Zaratustra", de Friedrich Nietzsche, para fazer uma pausa no estudo de álgebra linear. Disse-me a Carla que o estudo a obriga a ficar muito presa aos livros de matemática e que por vezes precisa de um escape, nem que seja apenas por meia hora. É nessas ocasiões que procura textos filosóficos, que aprecia especialmente e que lhe permitem abrir a mente.

On one of the terraces of Palácio de Cristal Garden, a place with a magnificent view over the Douro river, I met Carla, a young brazilian college student who came to Porto to study. She was reading "Thus Spoke Zarathustra", from Friedrich Nietzsche, to take a break from the study of linear algebra. Carla told me that studying forces her to stay very attached to Math books and sometimes she needs an escape, even if it is only for half an hour. In those moments she looks for philosophical texts, that she truly enjoys and that allow her to open up her mind.

Blanca & José Mauro de Vasconcelos

Num sábado à tarde, depois de mais umas horas a fotografar na Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett, deparei-me, ao sair do edifício, com a Blanca estendida sobre a relva dos jardins do Palácio de Cristal. Oriunda de Barcelona, a Blanca estava pela primeira vez a passar um fim de semana no Porto e tinha trazido na bagagem um exemplar de "Mi Planta de Naranja Lima" ("O Meu Pé de Laranja Lima"), de José Mauro de Vasconcelos, que lhe fora oferecido por uma tia. Tinha começado a ler o livro na véspera e estava a gostar tanto que quando a fotografei lia já as últimas páginas.

On a Saturday afternoon, after a few more hours photographing at Almeida Garrett Municipal Library, I came across, when leaving the building, with Blanca lying down on the grass of the Palácio de Cristal gardens. Born in Barcelona, Blanca was spending a weekend in Porto for the first time and had brought in her luggage a copy of "My Sweet-Orange Tree", by José Mauro de Vasconcelos, which an aunt had given to her. She had started reading the book the day before and she was enjoying it so much that when I took her photo she was already in the last pages.

Aníbal & Bomvento

O Acordo Fotográfico tem sido um excelente pretexto para conhecer gente. Sem este blogue eu sei que nunca abordaria estranhos na rua como tenho feito no último ano e meio. Aqueles que não conheço desafiam-me a descobrir muitas coisas novas e isso é fascinante. Às vezes basta falarmos de um autor que nunca li, um livro que desconhecia ou um tema que achei que jamais me despertaria a atenção. Mas já me aconteceu levarem-me a conhecer árvores centenárias, revelarem-me facetas insuspeitáveis, contarem-me a história da sua vida ou confidenciarem-me onde gostariam de ser sepultados. E depois há a alegria de constatar que entre mim e alguns perfeitos desconhecidos há, também, pontos em comum que vão para além do mundo dos livros. Foi o que aconteceu com o Aníbal cujo percurso de vida o levou a passar por locais remotos onde também eu já estive: Iguaçu, Buenos Aires e Ushuaia.

Os pais do Aníbal eram galegos, mas ele já nasceu no outro lado do Atlântico, em território "Celeste", naquela zona a norte onde a fronteira da Argentina conflui com a do Brasil e do Paraguai. Depois de ter feito o serviço militar em Ushuaia e de ter vivido em Buenos Aires, surgiu um convite para trabalhar em Portugal que decidiu aceitar. Veio para cá muito jovem, há mais de trinta anos, e por cá se manteve até hoje. Leitor assíduo desde muito pequeno, aprendeu português através dos jornais, que lia todos os dias, mas a sua verdadeira paixão sempre foi a Banda Desenhada. Foi natural, portanto, que o tivesse conhecido na secção de BD da Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett, um dos locais mais recolhidos do edifício. Aí, sentado numa poltrona, lia "Bomvento na Austrália", de José Ruy, um álbum que reinterpreta os Descobrimentos Portugueses através das aventuras do piloto Bomvento. Uma história que Aníbal, ele próprio um aventureiro à sua maneira, considerou muito interessante.

Acordo Fotográfico has been a great excuse to meet people. I know that without this blog I would never approach strangers in the street like I have been doing over the last one and a half year. The ones I don't know challenge me to discover new things and that is fascinating. Sometimes all we have to do is to talk about an author I never read, a book unknown to me or a theme that I thought would never catch my attention. But those strangers have also taken me to discover centenary trees, shown me surprising aspects of their personalities, told me the stories of their life or confided to me the place where they would like to be buried. And then, there is the joy of realizing that I have common points with perfect strangers that go beyond the word of books. That was what happened with Aníbal, whose life paths lead him to go through remote locations where I also have been: Iguaçu, Buenos Aires and Ushuaia.

Aníbal parents were from Galicia (Spain), but he was born on the other side of the Atlantic, in "Celeste" territory, in that northern area where the borders of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay encounter each other. After doing military service in Ushuaia and living in Buenos Aires, he decided to accept an invitation to work in Portugal. He came here at a very young age, over thirty years ago, and stayed until today. An usual reader since he was a child, he learned Portuguese through newspapers, thar he reads every single day, but his true passion always was comic books. So, it was natural that I have met him on the comic book section of the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library, one of the most retired spots of the building. There, seating in an arm-chair, he was reading "Bomvento in Australia", from José Ruy, an album that reinterprets the portuguese discoveries through the adventures of the pilot Bomvento. A story that Aníbal, himself an adventurer at his own way, considered very interesting.

Niklas & A Verdade DesconhecidaNiklas & The Unknown Truth

O Niklas começou a aprender português na Alemanha e veio até ao Porto na esperança de poder fazer um estágio. Infelizmente, uma série de problemas burocráticos impediram-no de concretizar esse projeto, mas o Niklas decidiu não desperdiçar a viagem: ia conhecer Lisboa e o Alentejo e só depois regressaria a casa. Conheci-o numa das tardes em que fui fotografar para Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett, no Porto. Lia "A Verdade Desconhecida - Pobreza e Direitos Humanos", um livro sobre um tema que lhe interessa particularmente e que permitia, também, praticar o português.

Niklas started learning Portuguese in Germany and arrived at Porto hoping he could get a traineeship. Unfortunately, all kind of bureaucratic problems stopped him from achieving that goal, but Niklas decided no to throw away the journey: he was going to visit Lisbon and Alentejo and would only go back home after that. I met him in one of the afternoons that I went to take pictures at the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library, in Porto. He was reading "The Unknown Truth - Poverty and Human Rights", a book about a subject that he is very interested in and that also allowed him to practice Portuguese.

Lurdes, a românticaRomantic Lurdes

A Lurdes foi à Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett com a família toda. A filha assistia a uma explicação, o filho fazia os trabalhos de casa com a ajuda do pai e a Lurdes aproveitou o tempo livre para ler. Os livros fazem parte da sua vida desde sempre. Quando era pequena, o pai era assinante da Reader's Digest e já nessa altura lia todos os livros que chegavam a casa. Ler antes de adormecer, por exemplo, é um hábito que vem desses tempos. Hoje em dia, conta com satisfação que é ela quem partilha os livros com a filha, que descobriu recentemente o prazer da leitura. Na tarde em que a abordei, lia "As Cinquenta Sombras Livre", o último volume da badaladíssima trilogia erótica escrita por E. L. James. A Lurdes confessou-se fascinada pelo livro, por este abordar temas tabu e abrir horizontes. Romântica incorrigível, considera-o acima de tudo um livro sobre o amor, vocacionado em particular para o público feminino dado a fantasiar com o príncipe encantado. A música calma que ouvia no iPod da filha ajudava-a a relaxar e a "entrar" na história.

Lurdes went to the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library with her entire family. Her daughter attended a lesson, her son did his homework with the help of his father and Lurdes used her free time to read. Books have been part of her life since forever. When she was a child her father subscribed Reader's Digest and back then she read all the books that came in to the house. Reading before falling asleep, for instance, is an habit from those days. Today, Lurdes happily tells that it is she who shares books with her daughter, who recently discovered the pleasure of reading. In the afternoon that I approached her, she was reading "Fifty Shades Freed", the last volume of the incredibly famous erotic trilogy written by E. L. James. Lurdes revealed she was fascinated by the book, because it approaches themes that are taboo and opens up horizons. As an incorrigible romantic, she thinks it is mainly a book about love, especially directed to the female audience always dreaming about prince charming. The calm music that she was listening to in her daughter's iPod helped her to relax and go into the story.

Não, contrariamente à esmagadora maioria dos leitores de George R. R. Martin que fotografei, o Sérgio não viu a série "A Guerra dos Tronos". A leitura da saga foi-lhe vivamente recomendada por uma amigo que gostou muito dos livros. Quando o conheci, lia o primeiro volume, mas estava a gostar tanto que já tinha comprado os outros livros quase todos. A fotografia foi tirada a bordo do 507, o "meu" autocarro de todos os dias, onde já não apanhava alguém em flagrante leitura havia algum tempo.

No, unlike the overwhelming majority of the readers of George R. R. Martin that I photographed, Sérgio never saw the TV show "A Game of Thrones". Reading the saga was highly recommended by a friend thar really enjoyed the books. When I met him, he was reading the first volume, but he was enjoying it so much that he went ahead and had already bought the majority of the others books. The picture was taken on board of the 507 bus, "my" bus of every day, where I didn't catch someone reading in a long time.

Ana & um thrillerAna & a thriller

Numa viagem de metro entre o centro de Matosinhos e o Campo 24 de Agosto, no Porto, sentei-me ao lado da Ana, que lia o thriller "Em Parte Incerta", da autora norte-americana Gillian Flynn. O livro foi-lhe recomendado por uma amiga, que o viu numa livraria, leu a sinopse e o achou perfeito para Ana, que gosta particularmente de policiais. A leitura, embora algo complicada no início, revelou-se muito mais interessante à medida que foi avançando na história e quando a fotografei a Ana admitiu que já estava a ficar completamente "agarrada" ao livro.

On a subway ride between downtown Matosinhos and Campo 24 de Agosto, in Porto, I sat next to Ana, who was reading the thriller "Gone Girl” from the North-American author Gillian Flynn. A friend saw the book in a bookstore, read the summary and thought it was perfect for Ana that especially enjoys detective books, so she recommended it. Although the reading was rather difficult at first, later it became much more interesting as the story progressed and when I took Ana's picture she admitted that she was becoming completely addicted to the book.

António & Julia Navarro

Em frente ao Hospital de Sto. António, no Porto, há um café pelo qual passo todos os dias quando saio do trabalho e me dirijo para a paragem do autocarro. Esse café, cujo nome nunca retive, ocupa quase todo o rés do chão de um prédio de esquina e conta com uma grande fachada envidraçada, junto à qual se encontram as melhores mesas, as que têm vista para a rua. Tenho a certeza absoluta que não foi a primeira vez que vi o António a ler ali, mais ou menos àquela hora, mas só naquele dia me decidi a entrar no café para lhe pedir que me deixasse fotografá-lo. O António lia "Diz-me Quem Sou" de Julia Navarro, uma autora espanhola que não conhecia. Tinha visto uma entrevista sua na televisão e como tinha lido e gostado de outros autores espanhóis — nomeadamente Carlos Ruiz Zafón ou Ildefonso Falcones —, decidiu avançar para a leitura deste romance. O livro, no entanto, não estava a suscitar grande entusiasmo. A leitura revelou-se agradável o suficiente para ocupar os tempos livres. "Vai-se lendo", afirmou. Para registar o momento, decidi voltar à rua e fotografar o António tal como o vi quando passei pelo café a caminho da paragem do autocarro.

In Porto, in front of Santo António Hospital, there is a coffee shop that I walk by every day when I get out of work and go to the bus stop. That coffee shop, which name I can't ever retain, has a huge window where the best tables are, the ones with a street view. I am pretty sure that this time wasn't the first that I saw António reading there, around the same time of the day, but it was only then that I decided to go in to the coffee shop where I had never been before to ask him if I could take his photo. António was reading "Diz-me Quem Sou", by Julia Navarro, a Spanish author that he had never heard about before. After watching her being interviewed on TV, he decided to give her novel a chance, mostly because he had already read and liked other Spanish authors like Carlos Ruiz Zafón and Ildefonso Falcones. However, he was not very enthusiastic about the book. Reading it was just pleasant enough to fulfill the free time. " It's ok", he said. To capture the moment, I went back to the street and pictured António just like I saw him when I walked by the coffee shop on my way to the bus stop.

Ler é muito divertido!To read is a lot of fun!

Para a Liana e para o Enio os momentos de leitura são sempre de puro divertimento, com direito a gargalhas e tudo. Foram essas gargalhadas, a forma como partilhavam o pufe e a comunhão em torno do livro que me levaram a pedir-lhes a fotografia. A Liana contou-me que quando o Enio era mais pequeno frequentavam mais a biblioteca e que naquela tarde só estavam por lá porque o Enio tinha insistido muito para que fossem. É que para além dos livros, que ele adora, há também na biblioteca muitos brinquedos disponíveis. E a Liana, obviamente, não pôde negar esse prazer ao filho porque para além dos momentos divertidos que passam juntos, considera os livros aliados extraordinários no desenvolvimento da imaginação e das competências de comunicação do seu filhote. "Lulu e o Pinheirinho Orfão" era o livro que liam quando os fotografei.

To Liana and Enio reading time is always full of fun, with laughter included. It was that laughter, the way they shared the puff and communion around the book that lead me to ask permission to photograph them. Liana told me that when Enio was smaller they went more often to the library and in that afternoon they were there only because Enio insisted a lot to go. The thing is, beyond books that he loves, there are lots of toys available at the library. And obviously Liana couldn't deny that pleasure to her son because besides the fun time they have together, she believes books are extraordinary allies in developing the imagination and the communication skills of her little boy. When I photographed them, they were reading "Lulu e o Pinheirinho Orfão".

Pai e filha numa cruzada pelos livrosFather and daughter on a crusade for books

Uma das muitas vantagens de ter começado o Acordo Fotográfico é ter vindo a conhecer, ao longo deste ano e meio, gente tão ou mais apaixonada que eu pelo mundo dos livros. O Miguel é um desses casos, uma vez que o gosto pela leitura o levou a criar o www.winkingbooks.com, a maior plataforma portuguesa de troca de livros, totalmente gratuita. No seu entender, os livros foram escritos para ser lidos e não para ficarem parados nas prateleiras lá de casa. Por isso, procura pô-los a circular e fazer do Winkingbooks uma enorme biblioteca ao alcance de qualquer um. Desafio ainda maior, no entanto, parece ser o de estimular a sua filha Clara a ler, "uma cruzada", como diz, já que os interesses dos miúdos são muitos e a atenção facilmente se dispersa. One of the many advantages of having started Acordo Fotográfico is that I met, in one and a half year, people as much or even more in love than me with the world of books. His point of view is that books were written to be read and not to be left in shelves at home. So, he tries to move them around and to transform Winkingbooks in a huge library accessible to everyone. However, a bigger challenge than this one seems to be to stimulate his daughter Clara to read, “a crusade”, as he says, because kids have lots of interests and their attention often wanders. In the effort to try that Clara spends more time reading, he usually takes her to Story Time at the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library. It was after that activity that I photographed them: Miguel was reading "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold", that was in his long list of books to read; Clara was reading "The Karate Mouse", with Geronimo Stilton as the main character.

A Flávia e o Ico costumam levar as filhas Yasmin e Maria Eduarda à Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett para que assistam à hora do conto, um momento de que as meninas gostam muito. O estímulo à leitura é algo que os preocupa bastante enquanto educadores e acreditam que a biblioteca tem um papel muito importante a desenvolver nesse campo. No entanto,  ambos acham que deveria haver mais atividades como a Hora do Conto à disposição das famílias, sobretudo aos fins de semana, altura em que os pais têm maior disponibilidade para acompanhar os miúdos. Quando os conheci, o Ico e as filhas liam aquele que é já um clássico da banda desenhada: "Há Monstros Debaixo da Cama". Um volume cheio de aventuras de Calvin & Hobbes, que o Plano Nacional de Leitura recomenda.

Flávia and Ico usually go with their daughters Yasmin and Maria Eduarda to Story Time at Almeida Garrett Municipal Library, a moment that the girls really enjoy. As parents Flavia and Ico are quite worried about stimulating their daughters to read and they believe that the library performs an important role in that area. They both think that more activities like Story Time should be available to the families, especially on weekends, when most parents have more time to spend with their kids. When I met them, Ico and the girls were reading a comic book that is already a classic: "Something Under The Bed Is Drooling". A volume full of adventures of Calvin & Hobbes, witch is recommended by the Reading National Plan.

A cena era ternurenta. O Abel lia um livro de grande formato e alternava a voz do narrador com a voz da protagonista da história, representando com grande empenho e convicção o papel de Bruxa Mimi, que andava às voltas com o seu novo computador mágico. A Eva, o Noam e o Adam, por seu turno, disputavam o colo do Abel num esforço para estar o mais possível em cima do livro e não perder pitada da história. O entusiasmo era de tal ordem que a minha interrupção, embora breve, gerou algum descontentamento. O Adam interrompe a minha conversa com o Abel e, forçando o pai a virar o rosto para o livro, diz: "Vá láááá!". É que não havia tempo a perder: uma vez terminada a história, os quatro iam para a sala de audiovisuais da Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett ver o filme "O Pedro e o Lobo".

The scene was full of tenderness. Abel was reading a large size book and alternated the voice of the narrator with the voice of the main character, representing with great commitment and conviction the role of Winnie the Witch, who was round and round her new magical computer. Eva, Noam and Adam, on the other hand, disputed the lap of Abel in a effort to be as close as possible to the book and don't miss a thing of the story. The enthusiasm was such that my interruption, although short, generated some discontentment. Adam interrupts my conversation with Abel and, forcing his father to turn the face to the book, says: "Caaaamooon!". There was no time to loose: once the book was finished, the four should go to the multimedia room of the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library to see the movie "Peter and the Wolf".
