Virgínia e o Reiki

Foi no inicio deste ano que a Virgínia foi desafiada por uma amiga mestre de Reiki a descobrir esta prática espiritual. Consciente de que ainda tem muito para evoluir, a Virgínia não só pratica Reiki todos os dias (nem que seja antes de adormecer) como também tem vindo a complementar os seus conhecimentos com leituras sobre o tema. Fotografei-a no final do mês de outubro, à porta do Porto Stock Fair, uma feira onde se vendiam livros com descontos até 80%. A Virgínia tinha acabado de comprar "Reiki e a Energia da Cura Pelo Amor", um livro que iria completar a sua biblioteca sobre esta prática e que considerou muito interessante por causa das imagens elucidativas que inclui. Leitora habitual, diz ler de tudo um pouco, conforme a sua disposição, sendo capaz, inclusive, de ler vários livros ao mesmo tempo. E o livro da sua vida? A resposta não demorou: "Talvez um dos que mais me marcou tenha sido "A Arte da Simplicidade"", afirmou. Este é um livro que também eu li há cerca de quatro anos e que não me canso de recomendar. Se vos aflige esta sociedade centrada no hiperconsumo e procuram viver de forma mais simples, este é o vosso manual.

Early this year Virginia was challenged to discover Reiki by a friend who is a master of this spiritual practice. As she is aware she has a lot to evolve, Virginia not only practices Reiki everyday ( if not sooner, just before going to sleep) she also has been improving her knowledge while reading about the subject. I took her picture at the end of October outside of Oporto Stock Fair, where books were sold with discounts up to 80%. Virginia had just bought “Reiki e a Energia da Cura pelo Amor” a book that would complete her library on this matter and she thought was very interesting because of the elucidative pictures it has. A usual reader, she says she reads a bit of everything, depending on her mood, and she even can read several books at the same time. What about the book of her life? The answer didn't take long: "Maybe one of the more captivating to me was "The Art of Simpincity", she stated. This is a book I also read about four years ago and I don't get tired of promoting it to others. If you are concerned about this society centered in hyperconsumption and seek to live a simpler life, this is your manual.

Carla & Ana Casaca

Quando entrei na carruagem e vi a Carla a ler, senti borboletas na barriga. E quando me aproximei e lhe expliquei ao que ia, acho que não lhe pedi uma fotografia: implorei. O meu pensamento fixou-se na Ana e na alegria que lhe daria este post. Tinha de fazer a foto! Algo tímida, talvez atordoada pela minha abordagem efusiva na presença de tantos estranhos em hora de ponta, a Carla sorriu-me e disse-me que era curioso que lhe estivesse a fazer aquela proposta: primeiro porque é fotógrafa e raramente se vê na posição de fotografada; depois porque não era a primeira vez que lia "Todas as Palavras de Amor". Contou-me que soube do livro quando foi lançado. Viu a publicidade na televisão e despertou-lhe interesse. Quando, por fim, teve a oportunidade de pegar nele e ler a sinopse, não mais o largou, rendida à história simples, mas muito bonita, sobre os acasos do destino. Alguns meses mais tarde, aborrecida com uma biografia do Dalai Lama, abandonou o livro  e decidiu voltar às páginas do romance de que tanto tinha gostado, para lê-lo, de novo, da capa à contracapa. Dalai Lama 0; Ana Casaca 1.

When I entered the carriage and saw Carla reading, I felt butterflies on my stomach. And when I got closer and explained my intentions, I think I didn’t ask for a picture: I begged for one. My thought stopped in Ana and in the joy this post would give her. I had to make the photo! A bit shy, maybe overwhelmed by my effusive approach in the presence of so many strangers in the middle of rush hour, Carla smiled to me and said that my proposal to her was funny: first of all because she is a photographer and rarely is in the position of the one being photographed; then because that wasn’t the first time she read "Todas as Palavras de Amor". She told me she heard about the book when it was launched. She saw the TV advertisement and it caught her eye. When, finally, she had the chance to grab it and read the synopsis, she couldn’t let go, surrendered to the simple, yet pretty story, about the accidents of fate. A few months later, bored with a biography of Dalai Lama, she abandoned that book and decided to return to the pages of the novel she loved so much, to read it once again, cover to cover. Maurício & Martin Amis

À semelhança de muitos outros passageiros que tenho fotografado, o Maurício aproveita as viagens de metro para ler porque, infelizmente, não tem muito tempo disponível para fazê-lo. "É um bocado triste, mas é verdade", lamenta. Fotografei-o a ler "A Viúva Grávida", um romance do britânico Matin Amis que lhe foi oferecido. Deste mesmo autor, recordou que já tinha lido também "Dinheiro", mas na versão inglesa porque considera muito fracas a maioria das traduções para português.  Maurício salientou, no entanto, que Martin Amis não é um autor que aprecie por aí além. A sua preferência vai, de longe, para Paul Auster e Douglas Copland.

Like many other passengers whose picture I have taken, Maurício takes advantage of the subway rides to read because, unfortunately, he doesn’t has much free time to do it. “It is a bit sad, but it is true” he regrets. I took his picture reading “The Pregnant Widow”, a novel of the British Matin Amis that was offered to him. From the same author, he remembered he also read “Money”, but on the British version because he considers that most of translations to Portuguese are poor. Maurício stressed, however, that Martin Amis isn’t an author that he enjoys that much. His preference goes, without a shadow of a doubt, to Paul Aster and Douglas Copland.

Victor, no Parc de la Ciutadella

Vaguear sem destino. Era só isso que queria fazer naquele domingo. E, se possível, fotografar alguns leitores. Tínham-me dito na véspera que não é muito comum ver gente a ler pelas ruas de Barcelona, porque os espaços públicos — jardins, esplanadas, cafés — são ocupados por grupos em busca de convívio, não de leitura. Saí de casa, ainda assim, com a esperança de conseguir conteúdo para o Acordo Fotográfico, mas acima de tudo feliz por rever a cidade onde passei uma semana de férias memorável há 15 anos e à qual nunca mais tinha voltado. Do bairro de Saint Antoni dirigi-me à Plaça de Catalunya e daí desci a Rambla, onde parei sensivelmente a meio para un café con leche y churros con Nutella. Lá em baixo, na Plaça Colom e já com o Mediterrâneo à minha frente, decidi cortar à esquerda e seguir até ao Parc de la Ciutadella. Aí encontrei o esperado para uma manhã de sol radioso: famílias a passear, gente a fazer exercício físico, artistas de rua a entreter quem passava, turistas e... um leitor!

Victor, que é chef, lê regularmente e diz preferir livros de ficção científica. No entanto, encontrei-o a ler algo bem distinto, uma obra particularmente sumarenta para quem exerce a sua profissão — "Confesiones de Un Chef", a biografia de Anthony Bourdin que revela toda a verdade sobre a vida na cozinha e o submundo da restauração. O livro foi-lhe oferecido por uma amiga, também ela chef, e embora tivesse lido muito pouco, Victor deduzia que não ficaria desiludido com o que lhe reservavam as páginas seguintes: sexo, drogas, mau comportamento e grande cozinha.

Wander with no destiny. That was all I wanted to do on that Sunday. And, if possible, take photos of some readers. The day before someone told me that it is uncommon to see people reading on the streets of Barcelona, because public spaces – gardens, promenades, coffees – are occupied by groups of people gathering, not reading. I left home, still hoping to find content for Acordo Fotográfico, but above all happy to see once again the city where I spent a memorable week during a holidays 15 years ago and a place I had never come back. From the Saint Antoni neighborhood I headed to the Placa de Catalunya and from there I went down the Rambla, where I stopped for a café con leche y churros con Nutella. Down there, at Placa Colom and with the Mediterranean in front of me, I decided to turn left and go to the Parc de la Ciutadella. There I found what one should expect in a sunny weekend morning: families strolling, people working out, street performers entertaining who walked by, tourists and… a reader!

Victor, who is a chef, reads regularly and says he prefers science fiction books. However, I found him reading something very distinct, a particularly juicy work for those who have his job – “Kitchen Confidential”, the biography of Anthony Bourdain that reveals the entire truth about life in the kitchen and its sub world. The book was offered to him by a friend, also a chef, and although he had read just a few pages, Victor knew he wouldn’t be disappointed with what the following pages had reserved to him: sex, drugs, bad behavior and haute cuisine.

Paulo & Dan Brown

É assim todos os anos: quando se dá a mudança para o horário de inverno constato com surpresa que a Rua da Restauração está muito mal iluminada. Passei pelo Paulo pouco depois das 18h, quando saí do trabalho e me dirigia para a paragem do autocarro. Sabia que naquelas condições seria quase impossível fazer uma boa fotografia, mas no fundo eu não queria perder a oportunidade. Foi talvez por isso que, sem parar de caminhar, comentei com a I. que estava alguém a ler dentro do carro estacionado pelo qual tínhamos acabado de passar. Quando ela me respondeu "Então até amanhã!", estava dada a deixa para que eu me decidisse a voltar para trás e fosse bater com os nós dos dedos na janela fechada, que se abriu prontamente.

O Paulo contou-me que em casa, normalmente, não tem tempo para ler. É por isso que tem sempre um livro no carro e aproveita qualquer pausa para pegar nele. Quando conversámos, estava a ler "Inferno", de Dan Brown, um autor de quem tinha lido os livros anteriores e cujo estilo aprecia. "Intercala histórias dentro de histórias e o ritmo evolui rapidamente", disse. Aliás, os policiais e os thrillers são de longe o tipo de livros que o Paulo prefere e destaca Brett Easton Ellis como o autor que mais o fascina. "Psicopata Americano" é o seu livro preferido e "Glamorama" o título que mais o surpreendeu. "São livros completamente diferentes de tudo o resto e que me marcaram muito", afirmou com grande entusiasmo.

Every year is the same: when the hour changes to the winter time I surprisingly see that Restauração Street is poorly lit. I went by Paulo a bit after six o'clock, when I got off work and headed for the bus stop. I knew that in those conditions it would be nearly impossible to get a good photo, but deep down I wouldn't want to miss the opportunity. Maybe that was why that while continue walking I commented with I. that someone was reading inside the parked car we had just gone by. When she answered me "So see you tomorrow!” she gave me the cue to turn back and knock on the closed window that promptly opened.

Paulo told me that normally, at home, he doesn't have time to read. That is why he always has a book in the car and he uses every break to grab it. When we talked, he was Reading "Inferno", by Dan Brown, an author he had read previous books and whose style he enjoys. "He places stories inside stories and the rhythm evolves quickly", he said. Furthermore the detective stories and thrillers are by far the kind of books Paulo prefers and he mentions Brett Easton Ellis as the author he is more fascinated by. "American Psycho" is his favorite book and "Glamorama" the title that most surprised him. "Those are books totally different from all the rest and that marked me a lot", he claimed enthusiastically.

Joana & Charlotte Brontë

A Joana lê de tudo um pouco, mas do que ela gosta mesmo é de livros de época. Pena é que em casa não disponha de tempo para ler, por isso investe cada instante passado no metro a viajar dentro dos livros, o que a ajuda, também, a perder a noção dos minutos que voam entre uma estação e outra. Por dispor apenas desses momentos, os livros duram-lhe muito. Era o caso de "Villette", de Charlotte Brontë, livro que admitiu estar a ler havia já bastante tempo. Bem distinto deste romance oitocentista é "Admirável Mundo Novo", de Aldous Huxley, uma obra publicada pela primeira vez em 1932 e que Joana considera o livro da sua vida. "Li há muitos anos e mantém-se atual", afirmou.

Joana reads a bit of everything, but what she really likes is epic books. Too bad that at home she doesn't has time to read, so she invests every moment spent in the subway travelling inside books, which also helps her to lose track of time between stations. Because she only has those brief moments, books last for a long time. That was the case of "Villette", by Charlotte Brontë, a book she has been reading for quite a while, as she admitted. Very different from this eighteenth century novel is "Brave New World", by Aldous Huxley, a work published for the first time in 1932 and that Joana considers the book of her life. "I read it many years ago and it is still a topical subject”, she claimed.

Ricardo, o leitor metódico

O Ricardo acredita que o mercado bolsista pode apresentar rentabilidades superiores a outras formas de poupança por isso, quando o fotografei, estava apostado em aprofundar os seus conhecimento sobre o tema. Com esse propósito, tinha começado a ler "A Bolsa Para Iniciados" cujo autor, Fernando Braga de Matos, é um dos mais respeitados em Portugal no que diz respeito a assuntos da bolsa. Mas para o Ricardo, que mais do que leitor habitual diz ser leitor permanente, o mundo da leitura não se limita ao tema das finanças. Sublinha o seu particular gosto por livros de História e aponta três clássicos da literatura greco-romana — "Ilíada", "Odisseia" e "Eneida" — como um conjunto de obras que elevou o seu gosto pela leitura a outro nível. Já no tocante aos romances diz não ter uma preferência vincada. Na altura em que conversámos, por exemplo, estava a ler a coleção Mil Folhas, do "Público", por ordem numérica, um critério que lhe permite resistir a qualquer preconceito que possa afastá-lo de um romance surpreendente. Este ecletismo não o impediu, ainda assim, de nomear José Saramago como um autor de que gosta muito.

Ricardo believes that the stock market can provide more profit than other forms of savings so, when I took his picture, he was willing to enrich his knowledge about the matter. With that in mind, he had started reading "A Bolsa Para Iniciados" whose author, Fernando Braga de Matos, is one of the most respected in Portugal in the stock market area. But to Ricardo, who more than a usual reader says to be a permanent reader, the reading world is not limited to Finances. He stresses his particular taste for History books and points out three classics of the Greco-Roman Literature — "The Iliad", "The Odyssey” and "The Aeneid" – like a piece of works that raised his taste for reading to another level. However, he says he doesn’t have an established preference in what is related to novels. At the time we talked, for instance, he was reading the Mil Folhas Collection (a set of 60 classics edited by “Público” newspaper) by its numerical order, a criteria that allows him to resist at any prejudice that may keep him away from a surprising novel. Still, this eclecticism didn’t stop him from choosing José Saramago like an author he appreciates in particular.

Nos próximos dias inauguram duas exposições do Acordo Fotográfico no Porto. A primeira abre já dia 2 de novembro, às 16h, no âmbito das inaugurações simultâneas do quarteirão Miguel Bombarda. A segunda inaugura dia 4 de novembro e acontece na Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett, onde tive o prazer de fotografar leitores entre março e abril deste ano. Espero ver-vos por lá! :)

Bem-vindo ao vício da leitura!Welcome to the addiction of reading!

O Nuno admite que não tinha o hábito e ler e que só começou a fazê-lo regularmente há cerca de um ano. A coisa aconteceu por casualidade, num intervalo entre exames, quando entrou numa loja onde estavam expostos os livros d' As Crónicas de Gelo e Fogo, de George R. R. Martin. Na altura pareceu-lhe que ler um desses livros seria uma boa forma de ocupar o tempo livre e não mais parou de ler desde então. Foi através desses livros, graças a uns marcadores com publicidade, que soube da existência de uma outra saga recomendada por George R. R. Martin, com o título "O Regresso do Assassino". Era o primeiro volume dessa série que lia quando o fotografei no Costa Coffe do Passeio dos Clérigos. Não sei se o Nuno estará viciado na leitura em geral ou apenas viciado na literatura fantástica, mas que não larga os livros é um facto. Ontem voltei a passar pelo café e lá estava ele, sentado à mesma mesa, perdido nas páginas do mesmo livro, a mesma expressão no rosto. Parecia que não tinha saído dali nos últimos quatro dias.

Nuno admits that he didn't have the habit of reading and only started doing it regularly about a year ago. It happened by accident, in a break between tests, when he got in a store where the books of George R. R. Martin, A Song of Ice and Fire, were on sale. At the time he thought reading one of these books would be a great way to occupy his free time and he never stopped reading ever since. It was trough those books, thanks to publicity book markers, he knew about the existence of another saga, recommended by George R. R. Martin, called “Assassin's Apprentice”. He was reading the first volume of that series when I took his picture at the Costa Coffee in Passeio dos Clérigos. I don't know if Nuno is addicted to reading or just addicted to fantasy novels, but the fact is that he can't let go of the books. Yesterday I went by the coffee again and there he was, sitting at the same table, lost in the pages of the same book, the same expression in his face. It seemed like he hadn't left the place for the last four days.

Ler: labor e lazerTo read: work and leisure

Para a Andrea, que é coordenadora editorial há 11 anos, o livro e a leitura são do mais democrático que há. "Há livros sobre tudo, de todos os géneros, de todos os formatos e tamanhos, enfim, há livros para todos os gostos", afirma. Para si, ler é um ato que define a sua identidade enquanto profissional, mas é também uma forma de viajar e uma fonte de prazer. Embora tenha de ler para trabalhar, diz conseguir separar as águas entre labor e lazer.

Fotografei-a no jardim do Palacete Silva Monteiro, no centro do Porto, onde funciona a Casa do Vinho Verde. Por estar em frente ao local onde trabalho e por proporcionar alguma tranquilidade, a par de uma vista magnífica sobre o Douro, não é raro encontrar colegas a ler neste jardim à hora do almoço, desde que o tempo assim o permita. Naquele início de tarde a Andrea ia mais ou menos a meio d' "A Rainha no Palácio das Correntes de Ar", o terceiro e último volume da saga Millennium, de Stieg Larsson. Tinha conseguido ler os dois outros tomos durante as férias, apesar de todos os cuidados que o seu bebé de 17 meses exige, o mesmo bebé que fez questão de deixar a sua marca no livro que teimava em roubar a atenção da mãe — a página 265 estava composta com fita adesiva e continha a seguinte nota: "Rasgado por Zé Maria a 31 de agosto de 2013". A Andrea não é leitora de thrillers, mas rendeu-se ao trabalho de Stieg Larsson, que a surpreendeu. Considerou os textos muito bem compostos, os personagens bem construídos e achou interessante a história ter por base uma investigação jornalística que desconstrói a ideia de que a Suécia é um país perfeito, imune à corrupção.

To Andrea, who is an editorial coordinator for 11 years now, books and the act of reading are the most democratic thing: "There are books about everything, of all kinds, shapes and sizes, there are books for everyone", she claims. To her, reading is an act that defines her identity as a professional, but it is also a source of pleasure. Although she has to read for professional reasons, she says she can break the waters between work and pleasure.

I took her picture at the garden of Silva Monteiro mansion, in the center of Porto, where are the headquarters of the portuguese Green Wine Institute. Because this place is just in front of the offices where I work and because it provides some tranquility, as well as magnificent view over the Douro, it is common to find coworkers reading at this garden during lunchtime, as long as the weather allows it. In that early afternoon Andrea was more or less in the middle of “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest” the third and last volume of the Millennium saga, by Stieg Larsson. She had managed to read the two other books during the holidays, is spite of all the attention her 17 months baby demands, the same baby that made a point to leave his mark in the book that insisted in stealing his mother's attention - page 265 was reconstructed with adhesive tape and had the following note: "Torn apart by Zé Maria on August 31st 2013". Andrea is not a thriller reader, but she surrendered to the work of Stieg Larsson, that surprised her. She thinks the texts are very well written, the characters so well built and she found interesting that the story has behind it an investigation that puts to the ground the idea that Sweden is a perfect country, immune to corruption.

Depois de ter lido quatro livros de Camilla Läckberg em muito pouco tempo, a Joana decidiu continuar a apostar na literatura policial nórdica por ter gostado muito do género e partiu para a leitura de "Os Homens Que Odeiam as Mulheres", de Stieg Larsson. Leitora habitual, diz que procura alternar romances com livros de suspense e que tem lido tanto que lhe é difícil apontar o livro da sua vida. Recorda, no entanto, que um dos livros que mais a marcou foi "Os Filhos da Droga". Fotografei-a na cantina da empresa onde ambas trabalhamos e onde almoçamos de segunda a sexta.

After reading four books by Camilla Läckberg in a very short period of time, Joana decided to keep on betting on the Nordic crime fiction because she enjoyed so much the gender and decided to read "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”, by Stieg Larsson. A usual reader, she says she tries to change between novels and thrillers books and she has read so much that it is hard for her to choose the book of her life. However, she remembers that one of the books more meaningful to her was “Christiane F: Autobiography of a Girl of the Streets and Heroin Addict". I took her picture at the cafeteria of the company where we both work and where we have lunch from Monday to Friday.

Paula, no metroPaula, at the subway

A Paula sempre gostou de ler e aproveita todo o tempo disponível para fazê-lo como, por exemplo, uma viagem de metro. Fotografei-a num desses momentos, quando íamos ambas numa carruagem de regresso a casa. Embora se considere mais leitora de romances — nomeadamente de romances históricos como os de Philippa Gregory — naquele fim de dia a Paula ia entretida com "O Fio do Destino", um livro de memórias onde a jornalista Laura Schroff conta a história da sua amizade com o pequeno Maurice. Quanto ao livro da sua vida, apontou sem hesitação "Fernão Capelo Gaivota", que leu quando era mais nova e cuja vertente espiritual a marcou muito.

Paula always enjoyed reading and she uses all of her free time to do it, for example, on a subway ride. I took her picture in one of those moments, when we both were on a carriage going back home. Although she thinks of herself as a reader of novels - mainly historical novels like the ones of Philippa Gregory – at the end of that day Paula was entertained with "Invisible Thread", a book of memories where the reporter Laura Schroff tells the story of her friendship with little Maurice. As for the book of her life, she named without hesitating “Jonathan Livingston Seagull", a book she read when she was younger and which spiritual side touched her deeply.

Susana & Daniel Silva

Fotografei a Susana na Praça dos Leões a ler "As Regras de Moscovo", de Daniel Silva. E porquê este livro? Simplesmente porque estava com 40% de desconto. Já tinha ouvido falar do autor, que sabia muito conhecido, mas nunca tinha lido qualquer um dos seus livros. O preço reduzido deste thriller foi o estímulo que faltava. Leitora assídua, a Susana procura alternar propositadamente entre estilos literários — antes de Daniel Silva, por exemplo, tinha lido Mia Couto — e quando lhe perguntei o que ler significa para si respondeu de forma concisa: "Ler é um enriquecimento. Simplesmente Gosto". "A Insutentável Leveza do Ser" é provavelmente o livro da sua vida, mas admite que terá de relê-lo um dia porque era demasiado jovem quando o fez pela primeira vez. Assim como ela, também eu sei que se voltasse àquele romance o viveria de uma forma totalmente distinta. Afinal, que sabia eu da vida aos 16 anos quando o livro de Milan Kundera (que era dos meus pais) me veio parar às mãos?

I took Susana's picture at Praça dos Leões reading "Moscow Rules", from Daniel Silva. And why this book? Naturally because it was 40% off. She had already heard about the author, she knew he was very popular, but had never read any of his books. The lower price of this thriller was the encouragement she was missing. A usual reader, Susana tries to rotate on purpose between literary styles - for instance, before Daniel Silva she had read Mia Couto -and when I asked what reading means to her she answered in a very concise manner: "Reading is enrichment. I simply like it”. “The Unbearable Lightness of Being" probably is the book of her life, but she admits that someday she has to read it again because she was too young the first time she read it. Like her, I also know that if I ever go back to that novel I would live it in a totally different manner. A Jannagueza admite que em casa o mundo virtual toma conta do seu tempo livre, sobretudo porque na sua condição de emigrante a internet potencia o contacto com a família. Faz, por isso, um esforço consciente para não perder o hábito de ler e hoje, mais do que há uns anos atrás, aproveita qualquer intervalo no seu dia-a-dia para fazê-lo. Sabe, no entanto, que para persistir os livros têm de puxar por ela, e é por isso que dá prioridade aos estilos literários de que mais gosta: romances, histórias verídicas e livros de suspense. Fotografei-a junto a uma paragem de autocarros em Matosinhos quando lia "A Conspiração" de Dan Brow, um dos seus autores favoritos.

Jannagueza admits that when at home the virtual world absorbs all of her free time, mainly because as an emigrant the Internet provides contact with her family. So, she makes a conscious effort not to lose the habit of reading and, today, more than a few years ago, she uses every break in the daily routine to do it. However, she knows the book has to absorb her to keep reading it, and that is why she prioritizes the literary styles she cares more about: novels, true-life stories and thrillers. I took her picture next to a bus stop in Matosinhos when she was reading "Deception Point" from Dan Brown, one of her favorite authors.

Mónica & Jorge Amado

Tenho o hábito de assinar e datar todos os livros que compro ou que me são oferecidos, por isso sei exatamente quando li "Jubiabá": corria o mês de Julho de 2004 e estava de baixa médica prolongada em Portimão, na casa dos meus pais, que me ofereceram o livro. Há umas semanas, no metro, voltei a cruzar-me com o pugilista António Balduíno (foi assim que guardei este personagem na memória até hoje), agora nas mãos da Mónica que lia sentada à minha frente. Este era o seu primeiro romance de Jorge Amado e também a sua primeira tentativa no sentido de adquirir o hábito de ler. Disse-me estar numa fase em que sentia maior disposição para a leitura, salientando que ler tinha a dupla vantagem de ajudá-la na concentração e a fazer as viagens de metro, onde passa muito tempo. O livro fora-lhe emprestado por uma colega de trabalho e a leitura ainda ia muito no início, mas uma coisa a Mónica já sabia: a história de António Balduíno não estava nada distante da realidade, era uma narrativa com a qual conseguia identificar-se e por isso, passadas poucas páginas, já se sentia presa ao personagem e ao seu percurso.

Por senti-la entusiasmada com o livro, recomendei-lhe outros romances do mesmo autor, obras que me marcaram e que supus que também pudessem agradar-lhe, sobretudo por causa das suas mulheres inesquecíveis: "Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos", "Tieta do Agreste", "Gabriela Cravo e Canela", "Teresa Batista Cansada de Guerra". Ofereci-me, ainda, para lhe recomendar outras leituras, sempre que quisesse. Se dependesse apenas de mim, a Mónica teria sempre bons motivos para continuar a ler. Mas o esforço terá de ser seu. Espero que persista.

I have the habit to sign and date every book that I buy or that people offer me, so I know exactly when I read “Jubiabá”: it was the month of July 2004 and I was on a long sick leave in Portimão, at my parent’s house, who offered me the book.  A few weeks ago, on the subway, I met once again the boxer António Balduíno (this was how I kept this character on my memory until today), now on the hands of Mónica who read sitting in front of me. This was her first novel of Jorge Amado and also her first attempt in creating the habit of reading. She told me she is in a phase more willing to read, stressing that reading has the double advantage of helping her focus and going through the metro rides, where she spends a lot of time.  The book had been loan to her by a coworker and the reading was at the very beginning, but one thing Mónica already knew: the story of António Balduíno wasn’t far away from reality, it was a story with which she could identify herself with and because of that, few pages had gone by and she was already feeling trapped to the character and to its path.

Because I felt her so enthusiastic about the book, I recommended her others novels of that same author, novels that marked me and I supposed could also please her, mainly because of its unforgettable women: “Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands", "Gabriela Clove and Cinnamon", "Tieta do Agreste", "Teresa Batista Cansada de Guerra". I also offered to suggest other readings, whenever she wanted. If it depended only on me, Mónica would always have good reasons to keep on reading. But the effort is hers alone. I hope she persists.

Joaquim, pai de família devoradora de livrosJoaquim and his bookworm family

Quando me aproximei dele queria, naturalmente, saber o que lia e porquê, mas o Joaquim preferiu começar por contar-me que em casa, ele, a mulher e os dois filhos leem muitíssimo. Nas últimas férias, por exemplo, não foram permitidos computadores a ninguém durante os 15 dias em que viajaram. Quando fizeram as malas, seleccionaram livros para levar: partiram com 25, regressaram a casa com 28! Salientou com visível orgulho que o Duarte, o seu mais novo de 13 anos, não só lê todo o tipo de literatura, como lê mais que o próprio pai. Durante as férias leu os seus livros — entre os quais os dois primeiros volumes da saga Percy Jackson —, leu dois livros do pai — "O Hobbit", de Tolkien e "Next", de Michael Crichton —, e ainda leu "O Código da Vinci", que lhe foi recomendado pela mãe. 

No que diz respeito ao Joaquim, na tarde em que o fotografei lia o segundo volume das Crónicas de Gelo e Fogo, de George R. R. Martin, o autor que mais leitores tem aqui no Acordo Fotográfico. Sim, também o Joaquim se rendeu ao poder de atração desta formidável saga na sua versão em papel, depois de ter visto as três primeiras temporadas da série televisiva. Levado pela curiosidade em saber como continuará a história, foi sem hesitações que decidiu encarar os dez volumes já editados em Portugal, cada um com uma média de 400 a 500 páginas. Na sua opinião, esta saga constituirá um marco na história da Literatura Fantástica, assim como o "Senhor dos Anéis" ou "Harry Potter", e considera que um dos segredos para o seu sucesso é o facto do autor conseguir, primeiro, que o leitor crie grande empatia com os personagens principais para os quais arranja, depois, mortes violentas. Uma estratégia que leva o leitor a querer saber que personagens marcantes se seguirão, deixando-o completamente viciado na história.

When I got closer to him, naturally I wanted to know what he was reading and why, but Joaquim preferred to tell first that at his home he, his wife and his two kids read a lot. On the last vacations, for instance, no one was allowed to use computers during the 15 days of the travel. When packing, they selected books to take with them: they left with 25, came back with 28! He proudly stressed that Duarte, his youngest with 13 years old, not only reads all kind of books but reads more than the father himself. During the holidays Duarte read his books - among which the two first volumes of Percy Jackson saga -, read two of his father's books - "The Hobbit" by Tolkien and "Next" of Michael Crichton - and he even read "The Da Vinci Code", recommended to him by his mother.

Regarding Joaquim, in the afternoon I took his picture he was reading the second volume of “A Song of Ice and Fire”, by George R. R. Martin, the author with more readers here at Acordo Fotográfico. Yes, Joaquim also surrendered to the attracting power of this huge saga in its paper version, after he had seen the first three seasons of the TV show. Lead by curiosity in knowing how the story will go on, he didn't hesitated to read the ten volumes already published in Portugal, each one with an average of 400 to 500 pages. In his opinion, this saga will be a landmark in the History of Fantasy Literature, as well as "The Lord of The Rings" or "Harry Potter", and he considers that one of the secrets to success is the fact the author manages to create empathy between the readers and the main characters only to later arrange them violent deaths. A strategy that makes readers desire to know what striking characters will follow, leaving them completely addicted to the story.

Fábia & Dan Brown

A Fábia decidiu que o verão que passou iria ser o verão de Dan Brown. Nunca tinha lido nada deste autor, mas como já tinha lido e gostado muito dos livros de José Rodrigues dos Santos suspeitava que as histórias escritas pelo norte-americano também fossem do seu agrado. Aproveitou os livros do namorado: começou pel' "A Conspiração", que adorou, e na altura em que nos conhecemos e a fotografei lia "O Código da Vinci". Contou-me a Fábia que durante o ano letivo praticamente só tem tempo para ler no metro, onde aproveita também para estudar. Diz que é por isso que aprecia tanto este meio de transporte, porque lhe permite fazer outras coisas enquanto se desloca. E eu desejo, sinceramente, que possa continuar a ler. A Fábia deve estar, por estes dias, a começar o seu curso universitário e consta que estudar medicina deixa pouco tempo para romances...

Fábia decided that last summer would be dedicated to Dan Brown. She had never read anything from this author before, but since she read and liked a lot the books of José Rodrigues dos Santos, she suspected that the stories written by the North American author would also please her. She used her boyfriend books and started by reading "Deception Point", that she loved, and at the time we met and took her picture she was reading "The Da Vinci Code". Fábia told me during the school year she only has time to read at the subway, where she also uses her spear time to study. She says that is why she enjoys so much this mean of transportation, because it allows her to do other things while she travels. And I honestly wish she could keep on reading. Because Fábia should be, on these days, starting her college degree and it is general knowledge that studying medicine is very demanding...

No 507: Milaydis & Jorge VolpiAt 507 bus: Milaydis & Jorge Volpi

Em 2003 a Milaydis, que é cubana, acompanhou o marido até ao Porto, para onde este veio trabalhar, e ambos foram ficando. Hoje, passados dez anos, já se sente também um pouco portuguesa, nacionalidade que acabou por adquirir. Conheci-a numa manhã em que íamos ambas no 507 em direção aos nossos respetivos trabalhos: eu para a livraria e ela para o Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar, da Universidade do Porto. A Milaydis diz ser uma leitora "semi-habitual porque nem sempre está para aí virada", mas garante que desde que tenha uma boa história entre mãos — nomeadamente romances históricos —, lê com muito gosto. Embora não possa apontar o livro da sua vida recorda que adorou "A Casa dos Espíritos", "Cem Anos de Solidão" e "Asteca" e sublinhou que, para si, ler é como "fazer uma viagem muito low cost a outros universos" e que, tal como nas outras viagens, naquelas em que nos deslocamos fisicamente, "ficamos com saudades e com um conhecimento adquirido na primeira pessoa".   

Quando a fotografei, Milaydis lia "En Busca de Klingsor", na sua edição original, em espanhol, pela Seix Barral, um livro que lhe foi oferecido por um amigo há já alguns anos. Na altura iniciou a leitura, mas não gostou do estilo narrativo, achando que o autor "forçava" a sua forma de escrever. Mais recentemente, à falta de opções nas prateleiras lá de casa, decidiu retomá-lo e embora mantivesse a sua primeira impressão, achava que desta vez ia lê-lo até ao fim, até porque reconhecia que a história era boa.

In 2003 Milaydis, who is Cuban, came with her husband to Porto, where he started to work, and both of them have been staying. Today, 10 years have passed, and she also feels a bit Portuguese, a nationality she ended up obtaining. I met her one morning when we both were at 507 bus on the way to our respective jobs: me to the book store and her to the Abel Salazar Biomedical Science Institute of Porto University. Milaydis says she is "a semi-regular reader because she isn't always in the mood", but she guarantees that as long as she has a good story in her hands - mainly historical novels - she reads with great pleasure. Although she can't choose the book of her life she remembers having loved “House Of The Spirits”, "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and "Aztec" and she stressed that, to her, reading is like "making a low cost journey to other universes" and, like in other journeys, the ones we physically move, "we acquired first hand knowledge and end up missing the places we travel to”.

When I took her picture, Milaydis was reading "In Search of Klinsor", in its original edition, in Spanish, a book given to her by a friend a few years ago. At the time she started reading, but she didn't like the narrative style, feeling that the author "forced" his own way of writing. More recently, with lack of options on the home shelves, she decided to pick it up again and although she kept her first opinion, she thought this time she would read until the end, because she admitted it was a good story.

Pedro & Tabucchi

O Pedro é médico no Hospital de Santo António, no Porto, e aproveitou uma pausa no trabalho para pegar num livro e ir para o Jardim da Cordoaria. Embora a profissão não lhe permita ter muito tempo livre, o Pedro decidiu há pouco tempo apostar mais na leitura e investir em bons livros, procurando alternar literatura contemporânea com clássicos. Quando o fotografei, tinha consigo "Viagens e Outras Viagens", de António Tabucchi. Já conhecia o autor, sabia-o apaixonado por Portugal e por Fernando Pessoa, mas o que o levou mesmo a comprar este livro de viagens foi a recomendação do jornal "Público", que o apontou como uma boa leitura para o verão. Na verdade, o Pedro ainda não estava bem a lê-lo, estava só a folheá-lo e a ler frases soltas antes de começar a ler de fio a pavio. Já se sentia, no entanto, completamente agarrado ao livro e sabia, de antemão, que aquelas páginas iriam render para pelo menos um mês de leitura, porque lê muito devagar, relendo as mesmas passagens as vezes que forem necessárias e voltando muitas vezes atrás. Em casa, esperava por si a "Odisseia", de Homero, com um dicionário de mitologia para ser consultado ao mesmo tempo.

Pedro is a doctor at Santo António Hospital, in Porto, and he used a pause at work to grab a book and head to Cordoaria's Garden. Although his job doesn't allow him to have much free time, Pedro decided not long ago to invest more in reading and in good books, seeking to rotate between contemporary literature and classics. When I took his picture, he had with him "Viagens e Outras Viagens", by António Tabucchi. He already knew the author and his passion for Portugal and Fernando Pessoa, but what led him to buy this travel book was the recommendation of "Público" newspaper, that emphasized this book a good read for the summer. Actually, Pedro wasn't exactly reading it; he was just flipping the pages and reading loose phrases before reading from cover to cover. He was feeling, however, completely attached to the book and he knew, beforehand, that those pages would be sufficient for a month of reading, because he reads very slowly, reading again the same passages as many times as necessary and going back several times. At home, he had “The Odyssey" by Homer waiting for him, with a mythology dictionary to consult at the same time.
