Foi ao fim do dia, na habitual paragem de autocarros onde inicio o caminho de regresso a casa, que me deparei com o Rui a ler "Segredos da Descolonização de Angola", um livro que pretende revelar toda a verdade sobre o maior tabu da presença portuguesa em África. Diz o Rui que gosta de História porque sabe que conhecer o passado lhe permite compreender melhor o presente. Refere, ainda, que se interessa pelas implicações que as decisões tomadas pelos políticos têm na sua vida e que procura sempre tentar compreender o ponto de vista de cada um dos intervenientes que moldaram a nossa História. Foi, portanto, com essa postura que partiu para a leitura do livro de Alexandra Marques. O Rui diz-se leitor habitual e talvez por ler tanto tenha sido incapaz de eleger o livro da sua vida. Sabe que o livro que mais o marcou este ano foi sem dúvida "A Guerra do Mundo", de Niall Ferguson, de novo um ensaio histórico que se interroga sobre o que correu mal no século XX para que a humanidade tivesse de passar pelo sofrimento atroz de duas grandes guerras mundiais. Mas atreveu-se a enumerar alguns títulos que serão, até ao momento, alguns dos livros que mais o impressionaram na sua ainda curta vida: "O Idiota", de Dostievski, "As Vinhas da Ira", de Steinbeck e "O Senhor dos Anéis", de Tolkien.

It was at the end of the day, at the usual bus stop where
I begin the ride back home, that I came across with Rui reading "Segredos da Descolonização de Angola" (“The Secrets of Angola’s Decolonization”), a
book that intends to reveal the all truth about the biggest taboo of Portuguese
presence in Africa. Rui says that he likes History once he knows that
understanding the past allows him to better understand the present. Yet, he
refers that he is interested in the consequences that political decisions have
in his life and that he always tries to understand the point of view of each
one of the protagonists that shaped our history. So, it was with that attitude
that he went on reading the book of Alexandra Marques. Rui says he is a usual
reader and maybe because he reads so much he was incapable of choosing the book
of his life. He knows that the book that most influenced him this year, without
a shadow of a doubt, was "The War of the Word", by Niall Ferguson,
again a historical rehearsal that
questions what went wrong in the 20th Century so that mankind would have to go through
the atrocious suffering of two World Wars. But he dared to enumerate some titles that are, until the present
time, a few of the books that most impressed him in his still short life:
"The Idiot", of Dostievski, "The Grapes of Wrath", of
Steinbeck and "The Lord of the Rings", of Tolkien.
